Somfy Protect, 2020–2022. Connected home, onboarding, errors

An installation that survives things going wrong

A smart home alarm, set up by someone holding the device for the first time, with one hand, reading a phone with the other.

Impact
A guided setup with a way out of every error
Somfy Protect installation screens.

Context

Static drawings and long paragraphs asked people to work out physical gestures from a screen. The happy path was guided. The rest, much less.

  • A failed installation means a support call, or a returned product.
  • The errors were the moments with the least guidance.
  • Each new device added its own exceptions.

Show the next gesture, and always give a next step.

Decisions

One action per screen, shown in motion

Copy cut down to the next action. When a gesture was hard to describe, a short animation showed it.

WhyNobody reads a paragraph while holding a sensor against a door frame.

The useful information is spatial: the gesture, the device, the distance.

Every error screen has a way out

With the technical team I mapped connection issues, missing permissions and half-done gestures. Each state says what happened, what to check, and how to carry on without starting over.

WhyAn error without a next step sends people to the support line, or the bin.

Result

  • A guided setup with recovery paths.
  • Reusable instruction and feedback patterns.
  • Clearer templates for the next devices.

Qualitative outcome. I'm not claiming a drop in installation time or support calls.
