Mektoube, 2023–2026. AI, recommendation, consumer mobile

Getting strangers to actually reply

A dating app where likes went up and conversations didn't. I worked with the CEO to find out why, then designed the fix through to production.

Mektoube screens: after a like, a prompt to send a first message about something on the profile.

Context

Mektoube is a dating app for people who are looking to get married. Invitations were growing. Reciprocal conversations weren't.

  • A like nobody answers is noise with good statistics.
  • Premium conversion depends on people actually talking.
  • Generic invitations gave the other person nothing to reply to.

Measure conversations, not taps. Then give the first move something to hold on to.

Decisions

Tie every like to something on the profile

People could like a photo, a prompt or a detail instead of the whole person. I reworked the icebreakers and the onboarding so profiles had something to react to.

WhyAnswering "hi" is hard. Answering "you hike too?" is easy.

Show people the score the algorithm already had

The recommendation engine computed compatibility for every pair, but discovery was sorted by date. We tested a feed sorted by compatibility. It became Super Match: fewer profiles, stronger chances of a real exchange.

WhyThe algorithm knew who matched. The users were the only ones who didn't.

Follow every change to the conversation, not the click

I defined the experiments with the CEO and tracked activation, acceptance, first messages, reciprocal exchanges and premium conversion.

WhyA metric that goes up while people stay silent is lying to you.

Result

  • +34% retention after onboarding.
  • +12% of invitations turned into conversations.
  • Super Match shipped as a product.

These figures come from my résumé and cover several initiatives together. They're not the effect of one screen, and I don't publish the baselines here.
